What I’m hoping to achieve through Lightfish is to help companies add some structure and direction to their marketing projects.

But if you just need someone you can trust to implement a marketing plan, I’m also your man.

My background


If you’re wondering what my direct marketing credentials are… 

A potted history!

Lightfish continues to thrive - helping businesses across a wide range of projects. Working on jobs as diverse as website scoping, design & build management, social media strategy & implementation, management of huge direct mail campaigns, co-ordinating company re-brands and large POS & signage projects.

I continue to work on retainers on a weekly basis for some clients or on a project by project basis for others - I am completely flexible.

Before this I spent 13 years as a board director at direct and digital specialists PCD Agency, (now Ewe) working across a range of sectors and projects but specifically in the financial services, healthcare, leisure and charitable sectors. I’ve worked with big brands such as Aviva, Engage Mutual, TD Waterhouse, Travis Perkins and National Farmers Union but also with SME’s and start-ups.

As well as helping PCD grow from a traditional direct marketing business into a truly integrated digital & direct agency, my role also involved motivating and managing creative & account management staff, relationship building & new business at senior level along with strategic planning both for PCD and Clients.

I’ve been directly involved with account direction and project management on a range of campaigns from product launches, design and build of new websites, multi level statutory mailings, acquisition and retention campaigns, important bids & tenders, re-brands for a range of large organisations and implementing integrated communication plans.

Before PCD, I was Direct Mail & Retention Manager at breakdown organization Green Flag, having previously earned my DM stripes from a stint at the north’s top direct marketing academy – Judith Donovan Associates (early JDA when the cigar smoking Queen of DM, Judith was there!)

In 2007 I became a Prince 2 practitioner – gaining the industry's leading project management qualification. 

My passions:


Music – I still get a buzz when I discover a great new song! I love live music and if you drop me an email – I’ll put you on the mailing list for one of my Best of Barbs CD’s with my musical highlights of the year.

Comedy – I still have an interest in stand up comedy. This stems back from setting up Leeds first comedy club called House of Fun, putting on the likes of Lee Evans and Frank Skinner. I’ve since devised Radio 4 Comedy Panel shows Banter and most recently had a TV pilot produced for the BBC with Russell Howard and Chris Addison called Rule of 3

Walking – Love the escape of getting outdoors and going for a big walk. Nothing better than the feeling of satisfaction from getting to the top of a peak! Yorkshire is the perfect place for this hobby.

Sport – Having played rugby union at Leodiensians RUFC and 5 a side football for many years, I’m more of a spectator now. These days I get most pleasure out of my kids sport, watching my son and daughter in their cricket, football and netball exploits.

Paleontology – Might sound a bit sad – but as a geographer and geologist its hard to give up! A bit of fossil collecting never did anyone any harm.


Tim is a highly personable and creative person, who takes time to understand and challenge the clients needs in order to deliver the optimal solution.

Tim has worked with me and the Aviva Life Bids and Tenders team for over 5  years. During this time he has helped improve the design of our proposals and presentations, from creative templates and covers, developing graphics to simplify and distil complex pieces of information as well as innovative ways of developing presentations.
